The Manchester City winger wants to do his part to give some of the poorest in society a second chance in life
Raheem Sterling has said he wants to be a “helping hand” by creating a charitable foundation to provide support to disadvantaged young people across the UK.
The 25-year-old has grown from humble beginnings to a global star in the Premier League for Manchester City and on the international stage with England.
There is a great financial reward associated with this, although Sterling said he took no satisfaction from the millions he earns and would rather use some of his wealth to help others, especially those of poorer backgrounds, relying on his own experience from growing up in London.
The winger wants his foundation to provide support to disadvantaged young people, including providing university scholarships and internships to encourage social mobility and give them a second chance in life that they might otherwise have been denied.
His announcement builds on the efforts of English teammate Marcus Rashford, whose campaign to eradicate child poverty in the UK has received widespread recognition and which awarded him an MBE from the UK government this summer.
Sterling says his foundation would also seek to help those who benefited from Rashford’s efforts.
“With that, I’m done with ‘what can happen, what should happen’. Now I’m trying to implement things that I can do myself, ”said Sterling The Sunday Times.
“Things I can give to young people under the same circumstances that I was in a different setting. If there is a university they want to go to, football equipment they need, other things. I want to be a helping hand.
“I’m not really worried about having this and that million. What makes me happy is seeing that I can help. Even if there are five people, even if it’s one, I’ve at least helped someone out of theirs Bubble coming out and seeing that there is something better in England.
“It depends, OK, I’m from North West London, I’m moving out of my area – what’s the use of taking everything I’ve done in life, taking my success and just building a big house somewhere? I am happy, cool, but I’m not. “
