Roland-Garros: suspicion of illegal betting on a women’s doubles match

This is a business that would have gone well for the tournament. Already disturbed by the Covid-19 health crisis, Roland-Garros could be the victim of another evil. According to information from the German newspaper Die Welt, an investigation by the Central Service for Races and Games (SCCJ) of the judicial police is underway regarding a women’s doubles match in the 1st round between Romanians Andreea Mitu and Patricia Maria Tig and the Russian pair -american composed of Madison Brengle and Yana Sizikov.

If the Romanians, favorites, logically won (7-6, 6-4), the suspicions relate to the fifth game of the second set. According to several sources, large sums have in fact been wagered with several betting operators in different countries on the winning of this game by Romanian players. The latter won a shutout, well helped by their opponent Yana Sizikova who committed two double faults during this game.

According to information from the newspaper L’Equipe (article reserved for subscribers), the suspicions relate mainly to her. The sums wagered reach several hundred thousand euros. Asked by the sports daily, Elsa Trochet-Macé, director of communication for the National Gaming Authority (ANJ), said that the organization had “not noted atypical bets in France on this match”.
