Roland-Garros: Martina Trevisan, rebirth after anorexia – Roland-Garros (F)

Childish joy was on his face on Wednesday. Martina Trevisan may be ten years older than the already star Cori Gauff (16), she was the less experienced of the two on the court. The Italian will discover, for the first time, the joys of a third round in a Grand Slam, at 26 years old. Tennis, however, has always been a part of his life. His mother was a teacher at the club in Perignano (Tuscany), his older brother Matteo (31) was world number 1 juniors. Ranked in the top 60 world juniors, the Transalpine had put down the racket at the age of 15, in 2009. Since 2014, she once again skimmed the ITF tournaments.

But it was only a few months ago that she explained this absence in a text published on the internet. “At home, I didn’t breathe a serene air. I worked out a lot, even when I probably needed to do something else. I felt I had a responsibility to heal the wounds of my family. “ The mission was impossible, and when the family exploded, his parents breaking up as his father suffered from a degenerative disease, Trevisan began to hate his “Muscular body”. Suffering from anorexia, she ended up swallowing only 30 grams of cereals and a piece of fruit each day. “I was in a state of apathy where I didn’t even recognize myself”, she describes.

“I had the support of many people who accompanied me to a new life”

Eventually hospitalized, she learned again to eat and to be at peace with her past. Little by little, she returned to tennis, accompanied by the coach of her youth, Matteo Catarsi. The wounds, revenge of a body she had “Long abused”, made the return chaotic. “But I had the support of many people who welcomed me again with open arms and who accompanied me to a new life”, writes the Italian, who started mental work last year. After a first appearance in Major in Melbourne in January (elimination in the first round), she will play her third round today against Greece’s Maria Sakkari, seeded No.20.
