Reconfinement: the Caen tennis Open stopped dead

The management of the Open de Caen (Calvados) suddenly ended the tournament on Thursday evening when the qualifying matches had indeed started. The health context and the announcement of the reconfinement by Emmanuel Macron annihilated the hopes of the leaders of the tennis club to go to the end of this edition.

It is obviously a blow for this competition, one of the most important in the region, won in recent years by players as prestigious as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gilles Simon, Richard Gasquet or David Ferrer. “The new announcements no longer allow us to finish qualifying. The Caen Open therefore lowers the curtain, ”explains the management simply.

Appointment given in October 2021

Some categories had already been canceled after previous measures, and the matches were played behind closed doors. The tournament’s referee, Nathalie Tranquart, recalls that no less than 600 players were registered for the first rounds of the competition. The final table was to be played this weekend.

“After an exchange with the prefecture, it became very clear that we had to interrupt the tournament, as soon as the confinement took effect. And the last matches were therefore played on Thursday evening. “A cold shower that does not endanger the event, however, since the organizers immediately made an appointment with the players and, hopefully the public, in October 2021, even promising to” come back stronger “.
