The 45-year-old Scholes was part of the consortium that bought 50 percent of the Minnows in 2014.

In Class 92, which included David Beckham, Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Phil Neville, the ex-England star even took over the helm of a game in 2015.

City quickly increased their funding to the second division, where they occupy fifth place in the table.

But Neville and Scholes watched as two late goals on Saturday resulted in a draw with Tranmere, leading to Alexander’s sacking.

According to Mail, Scholes was reluctant to take over and Warren Joyce, the club development manager, is expected to step in and help once he has completed a period of self-isolation.

His only serious management endeavor was a seven-game stint at Oldham last year.

After accepting he sold his stake in Salford when he accepted the offer to coach the Latics, he only won once and dropped out with owner Abdallah Lemsagam.

Ambitious Salford fans were surprised that 49-year-old Alexander was sacked after an unbeaten start to the league season.

Paul Scholes will act as interim coach while the club is looking to recruit a new manager.
