New England Patriots (2-4) – San Francisco 49ers (4-3) : 6-33

Between a San Francisco team diminished by injury and a Patriots team in the early Cam Newton era, we expected a physical game to suspense.

Far from it, Jimmy Garoppolo (20/25, 277 yards, 2 interceptions) has known for his return to Foxboro an extremely quiet evening, to the detriment of the show. Blame it on a total domination of the 49ers on the ground like an unstoppable Jeff Wilson (17 races, 112 yards, 3 touchdowns) and a helpless Patriots attack, led by a Cam Newton (9/15, 98 yards , 3 interceptions) lost. Unfortunately for San Francisco, the injuries of Wilson and Deebo Samuel come to mar this historic result which plunges New England into crisis.

A defense that looks like an athletics track

23 – 3, 301 yards at 59 and two players (Jeff Wilson and Deebo Samuel) with more yards than the opposing team: it is little to say that the 49ers dominated the first half.

Superior in all phases of play, the 49ers relied on their game of screens and their domination on the line to roll on the defense of the Patriots with more than 170 yards on the ground. It started from the first drive, concluded with a touchdown from Jeff Wilson after notably a good individual action from Garoppolo to snatch a first down.

Apart from this stroke of brilliance, Jimmy G did not need to force his talent. Short passes or runs, and yard after contact galore against an anesthetized defense. The recipe is the same for each drive and the points accumulate: the 49ers do not punt at half-time.

San Francisco is also intractable in defense. Rather than putting a lot of pressure on Cam Newton, the 49ers are content to leave him in his pocket and prevent him from running. And with Cam’s not having a good day, has no catcher to find, and the running game is nonexistent, the Patriots do nothing other than send two interceptions in the half. Result, even when Jimmy G made a gift to his former team by throwing an interception on its 37 yards, the Patriots do not advance and get only a field goal.

Without envy, without impact, without intensity, the Patriots have been extremely disturbing. It’s the biggest loss at home under Belichick, and the first time in 286 games (NFL record) that the Patriots have lost three games in a row: the crisis looms in New England.

For the Niners, the victory recalls the stature of this team. San Francisco would undoubtedly be in the top of the league if injuries hadn’t eroded their start to the season.
