The Dallas Mavericks announced that Kristaps Porzingis has had surgery on the meniscus in her right knee. The Latvian will now begin his rehab. It is assumed that the center will be fit again by the start of the training camp.
The Mavs announced this in a statement. According to Tim MacMahon from ESPN, there is optimism within the Mavs organization that Porzingis will be fit again in time for the start of the training camp. When that will be, however, is still unclear as the NBA has not yet announced when the new season will start.
Porzingis suffered the injury at the start of the playoffs against the LA Clippers, but then worked in the following two games. Due to his lack of mobility and the pain, the Mavs ultimately pulled the ripcord, so that the Latvian no longer played in the remaining games against the Californians.
The Latvian had previously played a good first season for the Mavericks and put on 20.4 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks on average. The 25-year-old still had injury problems and only played 60 of 81 possible season games including playoffs.
Before his trade to Dallas, the Big Man was on hold for almost 20 months after tearing the cruciate ligament in his left knee in February 2018 while still wearing the New York Knicks jersey. Before his meniscus operation, Porzingis had tried conservative treatment, but the meniscus did not heal this way, which is why the operation was performed.
The 25-year-old received a maximum contract from the Mavericks in the summer of 2019, which will bring him a total of 158.3 million dollars by 2024. For the final year of the contract, the unicorn holds a $ 36 million player option.
