NBA: Dallas Mavericks arguably chasing third star

The Dallas Mavericks already have two stars in their own ranks, Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzinigis, but the franchise is determined to play for the title in the future. For this, the Mavs should work meticulously on the squad, with every other player except the two stars should be available.

According to information from Brad Townsend (Dallas Morning News) is the declared goal of the Mavs, Doncic and Porzingis to put another star at the side. Dallas should also be ready, if necessary, to accept unwanted salaries from other teams.

All Mavs players who are not called Doncic or Porzingis are available for this. The Mavs also want to be active in the draft, Townsend reports that the Mavs want to trade upwards with their picks 18 and 31 in the lottery (picks 1 to 14).

Most recently, there were reports that Dallas does not want to raise any money in order to be in the perfect position for the 2021 offseason, when Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks is likely to be on the open market.

The Mavs want a third star as soon as possible, because the prevailing mindset is that no team in the Western Conference has a real star trio. After the Free Agency 2020 there were mainly superstar duos like LeBron James and Anthony Davis with the Los Angeles Lakers or Kawhi Leonard and Paul George with the Clippers, but no real Big Three. But now the Mavs want them.

Dallas Mavericks mit Interesse an Danilo Gallinari?

However, the Mavs have no cap space this offseason. If something is to happen, it would have to be done through trades. The Mavs had already been working on a deal in February to get Danilo Gallinari as Oklahoma City to Big D, but the deal for the Italian was broken.

Now Gallo is a free agent and should be an issue again with the Mavs. The 32-year-old put up 19.5 points for Thunder last season and hit 40.5 percent of his three-pointers. If the forward wanted to go to Dallas, it would need a sign-and-trade deal.

Another candidate is Tobias Harris of the Philadelphia 76ers, while Shams Charania (The Athletic) reported Mavs’ interest in Jerami Grant a good week ago. With their activities, the Mavs want to impress Doncic in particular, who still has a two-year contract in Dallas.

The 21-year-old will become a restricted free agent in 2022, but can already sign an early contract extension, the so-called rookie extension, in 2021 and thus be held in Texas until 2027 at the latest.
