The Belgian men’s team won their first match of the European Team Badminton Championships on Tuesday night in Liévin, France. Our representatives have won 4 wins to 1 against Turkey.
Things started off badly as Maxime Moreels (BWF 103) lost to Emre Lale (BWF 112) 21-12, 21-9 in the opener. The double Freek Golinski / Floris Oleffe equalized (1-1) after his 23-21, 21-13 success against Mehmet Capar / Emre Sonmez. Elias Bracke (BWF 200) placed Belgium in the lead (2-1) thanks to his victory (14-21, 21-18, 21-13) at the expense of Haktan Dogan (BWF 531). The second double Rowan Scheurkogel / Jona Van Nieuwkerke ensured the victory of the match (3-1) against Serdar Koca / Serhat Salim (23-25, 21-18, 21-15). Julien Carraggi (BWF 220) then applied to increase the final score in the last single he won (21-12, 22-20) against Murathan Eken (BWF 563).
The Belgians will meet Hungary on Wednesday afternoon (4 p.m.). The last opponent of the Belgians, France, seeded N.3, beat the Hungarians 5-0 in the other meeting of Group 3.
The winner of each of the 8 groups qualifies for the quarter-finals.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Belgian women’s team lost 5-0 to Russia (N.2) in their opening group 2 game, where Litunaia and Iceland will be their daux other opponents.
This Euro qualifies for the world team championships: the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup.
