Solskjaer suggests a new role for Van de Beek

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could use Donny van de Beek on the left of his top three after his impressive performance in Manchester United’s Carabao Cup win in Brighton.

The Dutch international played as an advanced United midfielder at Amex Stadium but often drifted left on Solskjaer’s direction, ending the game in a position where he could appear more often.

The United boss welcomed Van de Beek’s tactical flexibility, hinting that he could play a big role this season if necessary. While Daniel James started for United on the left, he was pulled back in the middle of the second half when Van de Beek switched to that role for the final quarter.

This is what Solskjaer said to Van de Beek:

“He has a very high level of football intelligence and tactically he went through the Ajax system. Dutch football is tactical, it knows football, it has its head screwed on.

“He’s a different type of left-sided player than Dan James and Marcus Rashford, but if he comes in and finds good pockets why not, he can play a lot of different positions which is sometimes a strength for a player.

“I remember myself sometimes, the No. 10 right and left center forward, Donny is someone the coach will always have on a squad.”
