Leigh Matthews admits the North Smith Medal made an election mistake

Leigh Matthews has admitted accidentally choosing Nathan Broad to replace Jayden Short when voting for the Norm Smith Medal.

Matthews chaired a five-person panel to judge who did the best in Saturday night’s Grand Final between Richmond and Geelong along with Lauren Arnell, Malcolm Blight, Damian Barrett and Peter Ryan.

Tiger’s star Dustin Martin (15 votes) became the first player to win three Norm Smith medals, with Short (6), Shane Edwards (4), Mitch Duncan (3) and Broad (2) making up the final ranking.

Matthews voted for Martin (3), Broad (2) and Edwards (1), but later admitted that Short should have received two votes.

“I didn’t do it, did I? I thought I went to Martin, Short and Edwards, ”said Matthews Channel Nines Sunday Footy Show.

“All I can say is that this is the worst mistake that has ever happened because when I wrote down the name Broad instead of the name Short, at the end of the game I was urged to write them down quickly.

“I’m glad Short didn’t miss a few votes. I’m sure everyone gave Martin their best on the floor, so the two’s and ones weren’t that important.

“But if I put Broad down, it was a very big mistake on my part. It was definitely Short Two and Edwards One. “

Short was outstanding for Richmond in the 31-point triumph over the Cats with 25 losses, six tackles, eight sections, six points and an enormous 771 meters gained.
