Johan Roijakkers is the new Head Coach at Brose Bamberg

Brose Bamberg has found its new head coach in Johan Roijakkers. The 39-year-old Dutchman comes from Bundesliga competitor BG Göttingen and has signed a three-year contract with Brose. Roijakkers wants to bring his previous assistant coach Hylke van der Zweep, performance and team manager Domenik Theodorou and advanced statistical scout Julian Meier to the cathedral city. The final details will be clarified in the coming days.

Leo de Rycke: “We were looking for an experienced trainer who knows the BBL and at best speaks German. All of these characteristics apply perfectly to Johan. In Göttingen he showed that he can give a team its own identity. In addition, it is not fixed in the system, but adapts it to the existing players. I’m sure that Johan and Bamberg are a very good combination and that he will quickly coach himself into the hearts of the fans with his passionate manner. “

Johan Roijakkers: “Brose Bamberg is a traditional club with a great arena and great fans. I am happy to work for such a large European club.

I am not committed to one system. It’s important to be able to make adjustments anytime, anywhere. However: defense is the central element. In the offensive, everyone has to know what the other is doing, everyone has to be able to rely on their teammates. We like to play with a lot of spacing and give the players freedom so that they can develop their skills on the offensive. This is particularly important for young players.

My staff and I want to put our stamp on this. And of course we want to be successful and bring back Bamberg basketball: a game with passion, intensity and victories. “

Johan Roijakkers was a professional in the Netherlands and Belgium before starting his coaching career with Basketball Bree. This was followed by several positions as assistant coach, including with the G-League team Rio Grande Valley Vipers, with whom Roijakkers made it to the finals, and with Dexia Mons-Hainaut, with whom he reached the FIBA EuropeCup Finals. In January 2011 he took over the post of head coach of the Dutch U18 national team, he also became head coach of the Slovak first division club BC Prievidza, with whom he was also the champion in 2012 and from the internet portal euro bas ket .com to the coach of the year of the Slovak League was chosen. He left Prievidza after the championship and was hired by the then ProA-league club BG Göttingen. In his second year he won the championship, which also meant promotion to the Bundesliga, where he established the club in the following years. Most recently, the “violets” made it to the quarter-finals of the 2020 final tournament.
