Individual sport or not? Leipzig’s fitness studios and tennis officials struggle with lockdown

Leipzig. The lockdown beginning on November 2nd means the temporary end for amateur and popular sports, both indoors and outdoors. Team sports, in particular, are out in the rain, because individual sports should, according to the rules decided by the federal and state governments on Wednesday, remain allowed. That means: jogging alone or cycling around the Cospudener See are also possible in the coming weeks. After all, because the (amateur) athlete needs a little compensation.

Still, questions remain. Exercising in the gym and playing tennis actually belong to the individual sport category. But at least the former go away empty-handed. Because according to the rules that have become known to date, fitness studios are to be closed from Monday as well as swimming pools and all other sports facilities. Thomas Flechsig canceled his holiday in the Baltic Sea after the bad news. He agrees with his employees of the Skyline Sportclub and other fitness studios in Leipzig: “The lockdown is complete cheese.” Paralyzing an entire industry is nonsense. “We have proven for six months that the hygiene concepts can be implemented,” said the Skyline boss.

Saxony’s tennis president Rainer Dausend is hoping for the Saxon state government. Because she will not present her new Corona Protection Ordinance until Friday evening and has the opportunity to deviate from the federal decisions. Dausend would like a special permit for the individual sport of tennis, at least for the NK 1 and NK 2 squads. He also hopes for mildness for the players who have currently qualified for the German indoor youth championship in Essen and Espenhain. “If these athletes can no longer train for four weeks, what results should be achieved in December or January,” the STV boss asks himself.

Doubts about the end of the lockdown on November 30th

For Tim Wittig, Vice President of the Espenhain Tennis Performance Center, exceptions to tennis are currently unthinkable. “There will be a general regulation on the part of the state. The tennis halls will be closed. “One must bow to the general cause, says Wittig” and implement the measures to protect the general public. “

Ronny Lindenberger, chairman of the rehabilitation sports club “Healthy in Leipzig”, is also pessimistic about the state government meeting. He regrets the development of events. The 50-year-old has lost a certain amount of trust in the government. “This time the federal and state governments are in agreement. Still, there is no battle plan. What should be different from December 1st? “Lindenberger sincerely hopes that this date and the end of the lockdown will remain:” Otherwise it will be very bitter. “
