“I’m not quite back yet”

Dhe directly converted free kick by Ilkay Gündogan in the 3-1 win against Manchester City FC Porto was due in particular to the talent of the German national soccer player.

“I have to admit, I don’t practice free kicks that often, but there are certain distances that I feel comfortable with, and that was the perfect distance for me,” said Gündogan after the Champions League season opener on Wednesday evening.

“Regarding the fact that Pep (Guardiola, coach) wanted to replace me: I’m glad he didn’t,” said the midfielder. However, Gündogan had to leave the pitch three minutes after his goal to make it 2-1. Probably also because, like many of his teammates, he is not in full possession of his powers.

Regarding Fernandinho’s injury-related substitution and the personnel situation at Manchester City, he said: “There are more, of course, and some that have just come back, and I myself am not quite back after I got Covid-19 would have.”

The team is happy about the large squad, but “the bottom line is that not everyone is there”.
