How Manchester United should compete after the summer transfer signings – Richard Fay

Manchester United added five new signings in the summer transfer window.

Dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek was joined by a quartet of new signings on the day of the transfer deadline as Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri had made all the arrangements. United also announced a deal to sign Amad Diallo at a later date.

The five newcomers strengthen a United squad, which also saw a number of departures in the summer. But how do they affect the starting grid?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be interested in taking full advantage of his squad in the coming weeks but we think they should get fit with everyone.

Here our authors from MEN United choose their team:

It might not have been the summer transfer window many fans had envisioned, but United deserved it something Credit to the players who actually signed them to help strengthen the squad, if not the line-up.

Henderson has put pressure on De Gea in goal but the Spaniard should still be the first choice while Lindelof’s poor form early in the season was unfairly compounded by the fact that he is simply not fit. He remains more reliable than Bailly.

Telles goes straight into the line-up as a more offensive alternative to Shaw, but the same doesn’t apply to Van de Beek in midfield. Impressed early on, but best used as a replacement for Fernandes, or perhaps even as an option to cut in from the left.

Cavani is a great option from the bench but shouldn’t be a priority over Martial just yet and Greenwood remains the only decent right winger at the club despite being a forward.

Solskjaer’s options are only marginally better than they were a week ago, and it’s unlikely that his strongest team will look too different in the weeks and months to come.

De Gea should keep his place in goal for now as he has done little wrong so far but there are defensive issues. Telles has to start before Shaw. He poses more threat in the future and Shaw was poor over the weekend. The question of who is Maguire’s partner cannot be further resolved. Lindelof and Bailly both keep fighting, maybe it is time to give Tuanzebe a chance. It would be a brave move and he needs to improve his match fitness, but Solskjaer is running out of alternatives.

In midfield, everything revolves around Pogba and Van de Beek. Matic and Fernandes clearly need to be in the strongest midfield and for now Pogba should keep his place. He can still be a world class player in his day. This also gives Solskjaer the ability to use Van de Beek from the bench.

The options on the bench have improved in this window, and Cavani looks like he would fit into this category too. It’s hard to see him take the top three spots from Greenwood, Martial and Rashford at the moment, but the Uruguayan could make a very good sub. United’s failure to sign a right-winger means Greenwood will keep that role until at least January.
