Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son reunite as Tottenham Burnley at Turf Moor | sinks football news

For 76 minutes, Burnley did a good job at Turf Moor keeping Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son calm.

Unplayable for much of this season when he fell into midfield, Kane was precisely marked every time he received the ball, meaning that Son was largely starved as a result. It seemed like Sean Dyche figured out how to suffocate Spurs.

But even on a night when the couple could rarely combine in open play, they still found a way to goal in the end.

After Kane had thrown Erik Lamela’s corner into the six-yard box with less than a quarter of an hour to go, Son was ready to take advantage and steer his header into the roof of the net.

The goal sealed a valuable victory for Spurs and underscored the seemingly telepathic understanding between Kane and Son. The latter’s grin when he realized that it was the former who had established it underscored the good relationship between them.

Kane and Son have scored nine goals in just six Premier League games this season.

Kane set up eight of Son’s seven goals. In total, he has now provided as many templates (eight) as he has managed in the past three seasons together. Son only needs three more goals to reach his balance for the entire last campaign.

The numbers are remarkable, but the understanding of Kane and Son is nothing new. In fact, they have now scored 29 goals in the Premier League, just behind Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard in the history of the competition and on par with David Silva and Sergio Aguero, and Robert Pires and Thierry Henry.

At this rate, you wouldn’t bet against revising Drogba and Lampard’s record before the end of the season. The Kane and Son Show proves difficult to stop for the rest.

Carra: Kane has a special understanding

It has a lot to do with understanding the game, according to Kane Sky Sports Expert Jamie Carragher. The 27-year-old not only gives his game creativity, but also knows exactly where to position himself on the pitch.

This also applies to the defensive side of the game. Just before scoring the winning goal, Kane even had the mental presence to fall from a Burnley corner onto the Spurs goal line and prevent James Tarkowski from leading the hosts at the front.

“Harry Kane is one of the smartest footballers in the game when it comes to understanding the game,” said Carragher.

“It’s awareness,” he added as he analyzed vital clearance. “‘I can’t control the ball in the air, but I can stop by.’

“The position Harry Kane is in as soon as the ball goes over him is brilliant, that understanding and awareness.

“I think managers get very frustrated with players when they understand the game.

“When you give them directions, they don’t really understand what to do.

“But Kane is the guy you tell him once and it’s done.”

Neville: Son is world class

Of course, it’s not just Kane who has taken his game to a new level this season. Son’s eighth goal of the season brought him to the top of the scorers list from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and, according to Gary Neville, it reflects his stature as a world-class player.

“I think Mourinho was asked a question last week about when Son will be world class and he said he was already there,” said Neville. “I would absolutely agree.

“He’s an absolutely fantastic player. He’s a nightmare to play against and he does all the real runs.

“We talk about Raheem Sterling, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah regularly, but Son is that quality. If he played for Liverpool or Manchester City, he would do what these guys do. He’s absolutely brilliant.

“I think any team in the world would take Son. There isn’t a team in Europe or the Premier League that wouldn’t take him.”

Harry Kane was pleased to provide further assistance

Kane, meanwhile, was pleased that his flick-on fell on the right man.

“When things go a little your way, the ball usually falls on the right people and Son is in good shape right now,” he said Sky Sports. “We’re lucky it fell on him and he put it away.”

When asked how he explains their extraordinary number of goal combinations this season, Kane added, “As I’ve fallen deeper this season, the big players have been running after and that has given me room to put my head up and play those passes . Maybe we haven’t done that in the past few years.

“The confidence is high and everyone knows that if I get this ball and turn around, they have a chance to reach the goal. We go with the flow and it was an important win in a difficult place tonight.”

Mourinho: No jealousy between Kane and Son

Jose Mourinho praised Harry Kane and Heung-min Son’s selflessness

Jose Mourinho was similarly delighted, insisting that much of the credit for the relationship between Kane and Son should go to his Spurs predecessor, Mauricio Pochettino.

“I think it’s an understanding that comes from Mauricio’s time. I don’t want all the credit for myself, let’s share it with Mauricio because they played together for quite a long time, probably in a different way.

“Now Harry is probably not always number 9 because he gets into some areas that allow Son to get into different areas as well.

“What I am most happy about is not that they are two top players, but that they are close friends. There is no jealousy. ‘I play for you, you play for me, we both play for the team, we both play for Tottenham.’

“So thank you two great guys.”
