Greg Van Avermaet to hospital after heavy fall in Liège-Baste …

Greg Van Avermaet had a serious crash on Sunday in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The CCC leader collided at the back of the peloton on a traffic island and had to give up immediately. The unfortunate Olympic champion was still in the Liège hospital an hour after the finish, where after the scan a fracture of the right shoulder was not immediately found, but he would have torn the ligaments of that joint.

The Olympic champion was involved in a crash in the peloton with the Australian Jay McCarthy (BORA-hansgrohe), who was able to continue. Yates also crashed and had to give up.

The cyclists collided with a traffic bollard on a traffic island. It is not yet known what both riders, who were taken to hospital, got over from the crash at about 100 kilometers from the finish.

The CCC leader is still under investigation and complains of hellish pain on that shoulder. If this diagnosis is confirmed, he can forget about the remaining cobbled classics and immediately turn his focus to the next season.
