Germany’s Julia Goerges announces her retirement at age 31

German tennis player Julia Goerges announced her retirement with immediate effect on Wednesday after winning seven titles in her career, all between 2018 and 2019.

The 31-year-old Goerges, a 2018 Wimbledon semi-finalist, peaked at No. 9 in the WTA rankings, with her last appearance at the recent Roland Garros.

“Dear tennis, I’m writing to you, because I’m ready to say ‘goodbye’,” Goerges said on Instagram. “I have had so many different types of emotions throughout our journey and I am very grateful for all that you have shown and taught me,” added the German.

“I learned to deal with the most difficult defeats but also to enjoy the most incredible victories of my career, to fight many times when I was fighting with you and through all that we never lost sight of our dreams. I am ready to close the tennis chapter. of my life and open a new one, “he said.

Goerges helped put Germany back on the women’s tennis map following the retirement of Steffi Graf and Anke Huber, along with three-time Grand Slam winner and former world number one Angelique Kerberer, and Andrea Petkovic.

The president of the German Tennis Federation (DTB), Ulrich Klaus, praised her as “an outstanding representative of German tennis”. “You could always feel how much passion she had … Julia always thrilled us with her tennis. We will miss her so much on tour and on the national team,” Klaus said in a statement.
