Stand: 12:26 p.m. | Reading time: 3 minutes
The German national team was once a reliable source of odds. But TV viewers are less and less interested in the DFB team’s appearances. The duel against Turkey was a low point.
In the general account of Lothar Matthäus on the situation of the national team (“Germany has now lost the lead for the fifth time, against Turkey three times in a game. Again, tactical mistakes by Jogi Löw on the substitutions cost the victory”) fell in the conversation of the record National player with the “image” after the 3: 3 against Turkey also this sentence: “I am amazed when I see that there are many players like Nico Schulz for Germany who sit on the bench in their clubs. This is exactly why nobody in Germany turns on the television anymore. “
In fact, that was the case again on Wednesday evening. National team games, street sweepers in good times, are increasingly degenerating into increasingly weak odds. Only 5.69 million viewers were to be found in front of the TV set during the first half, compared with 5.94 million during the second half. According to the special arithmetic of the rating measurement, that was an average of 5.82 million viewers.
This gave RTL a reasonable market share, with 19.1 percent in the first half and 24 percent in the second half. However, the odds curve tends to go down when the DFB team appears. The national team, it is becoming more and more apparent, no longer brings the broadcasters the blessing, as was the case years ago. Often the club competitions now depend on the German team. The second-rate Supercup last week between FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund turned in 8.07 million.
Eleventh game that remains below the ten million mark
SPORT BILD focused on this in an extensive analysis this week. The game in Cologne against the Turkish team was therefore the eleventh game that has remained below the mark of ten million viewers. Side note: the broadcasters pay between five and ten million euros to broadcast a game.
The latest figures should give the people in charge of the national team to think about team manager Oliver Bierhoff and national coach Löw: 8.59 million against Belarus (4: 0), 8.29 million against Northern Ireland (6: 1), 7.94 million against Spain ( 1: 1) and 6.51 million against Switzerland (1: 1).
While the match against the Confederates marked the lowest market share of the Löw era (21.7 percent) so far, it is now the Turkey game with an average market share of 21.6 percent reported by the broadcaster.
The game of May 29, 2009 against China on ARD with 2.61 million viewers remains the duel, which generated the least attraction. However, the meeting started at 2 p.m. Only one other game generated less interest than the draw on Wednesday evening: the 3: 5 against Switzerland in May 2012 on ZDF with 5.51 million viewers, at that time already kicked off at 6 p.m., so also not at prime time. In both cases, the market shares were correspondingly higher than now against Turkey.
A proud 2.41 billion viewers have so far sat in front of the television at the 184 international matches under national coach Löw. However, the games have long ceased to have a magical attraction. This is partly due to the formats such as the unattractive and often perceived as superfluous Nations League, and partly to the quality of the performances.
Many people seem to be doing as Lothar Matthäus illustrated before the game against Turkey: “In fact, I watched the two games against Switzerland and Spain on TV. But that was because I happened to be home anyway. I no longer mark international matches in red on my calendar. The performance has really not impressed recently. Jogi Löw and his team have to work to gain the fans’ interest again. “
