Former San Francisco 49ers player Dana Stubblefield was sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison with life imprisonment accused of raping a mentally disabled woman who, according to prosecutors, he lured into his home with the promise of babysitting.

Sentence was handed down by a judge in San José after his request for a new trial was rejected, the Mercury News reported. Last week, the 6th District Court of Appeals rejected a related petition filed by his attorneys.

In July a jury found guilty Stubblefield, 49, of raping a woman at gunpoint. THe was also convicted on charges of forcing her to have oral sex and illegally detaining her. Since the verdict, the former player has been in the Santa Clara County Jail.

Stubblefield began his 11-year career as a lineman in the NFL with the 49ers in 1993. and was named defensive rookie of the year. He was later voted the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 before leaving the team to play in Washington. He returned to San Francisco to conclude his career and played with the 49ers in 2000 and 2001, and with the Raiders in 2003.

One day before the assault occurred in April 2015, Stubblefield contacted the 31-year-old woman on a babysitting website and arranged an interview, the prosecution said.

According to a report from the Morgan Hill Police Department, the interview lasted approximately 20 minutes. He subsequently received a text message from Stubblefield saying that he wanted to pay him for his time that day and returned to the house.

After the rape, Stubblefield gave her $ 80 and let her go, according to the police report. The woman immediately went to the police and reported the rape. The DNA test matched Stubblefield, according to the document.

Defense attorneys argued that there was no rape and that the woman agreed to have the sexual relationship.
