Eugenie Bouchard throws the towel

Struggling in her second round qualifying match at the ITF tournament in Macon, Georgia, Eugenie Bouchard retired to American Katie Volynets on Tuesday.

Trailing 6-4 and 3-0, the Quebecer conceded victory after 64 minutes of play to her rival who holds the 325th place on the WTA circuit.

First seed in the pre-tournament stage and 140th player in the world, Bouchard saw Volynets make five breakages on 14 occasions at her expense, while being unable to take advantage of her two chances to take the opposing service. The American athlete was 52-35 in points won.

The day before, “Genie” had defeated Alexa Glatch in two identical sets of 6-2. At the recent French Open, she reached the third round.
