After an eventful career, Robinho wants to play again for his youth club. But fans and sponsors of FC Santos are resisting the obligation. There is a lawsuit against the striker, the allegations are serious.
EIt should be the conciliatory end to a turbulent career. But under pressure from sponsors and fans, the contract between FC Santos and Robinho was suspended after only about a week.
The reason for the widespread opposition to the 36-year-old Brazilian striker, who once started his career with FC Santos, is the fact that Robinho has been convicted of group rape allegations.
The player should be able to concentrate fully on his defense in the process that is running in Italy, it said in a message on the club’s website on Friday evening.
Audio files as evidence
The Brazilian sports portal “Globoesporte” published the content of audio files with piquant details and explicit statements on Friday, which the Italian judiciary is said to have used for the verdict against Robinho.
The former Bundesliga professional Zé Roberto was “shocked” on Brazilian sports television by the statements that were attributed to his former national team colleague.
Robinho was sentenced to nine years in prison in Italy in 2017. The former AC Milan player and five other men raped a woman in a disco in the northern Italian metropolis in 2013, a court in Milan ruled.
During the rape, the group is said to have made the woman drunk and defenseless. The player’s defender announced at the time that he would be challenging the first-degree conviction.
Sponsors demanded separation
In a letter from the lawyers, from which “Globoesporte” quoted on Friday, Robinho again denied the allegations. He has always entered into sexual relationships amicably.
After the contract was signed with him last Saturday, according to the newspaper “Folha de S. Paulo”, a sponsor had already ended his engagement with Santos. At least four sponsors asked the traditional club, where the Brazilian icon Pelé played for 17 years, to withdraw from the contract.
During his career, Robinho has been under contract with Real Madrid, Manchester City, AC Milan and most recently Istanbul Basaksehir. The 1.72-meter-tall winger completed 100 international matches for Brazil.
