DFB Cup: FC Bayern Munich beats FC Düren

Without numerous regular players, FC Bayern Munich have reached the second round of the DFB Cup. Against 1. FC Düren, the record cup winner managed a 3-0 (2-0). Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting (24th minute, 75th) and Thomas Müller (36th) scored the goals against the fifth division team.

Compared to the last league game against Hertha BSC, Bayern coach Hansi Flick changed his team to eight positions: With the exception of defender Niklas Süle, the Munich team refrained from calling their national players into the squad. Otherwise set professionals like Robert Lewandowski, Joshua Kimmich or David Alaba were still used in the Nations League on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In their place were the summer commitments: Alexander Nübel started in goal, Marc Roca in central midfield. The lead emerged from the interaction of three last-minute transfers: returning Douglas Costa sent Bouna Sarr steeply on the right wing, the full-back played the ball flat into the center. There Choupo-Moting straddled the ball to his first goal over the line (24th).

Düren cannot keep up the pace

Previously, the Düren team balanced the game with diligent efforts in the pressing, and a header from former U-national striker Marc Brasnic gave them their first own scoring opportunity early (1st). With a longer playing time, Bayern got the game under control, the Düren team only got into the duels with difficulty. After a playing error by goalkeeper Kevin Jackmuth, Düren’s central defender Joran Sobiech Costa downed in the penalty area.

After the break, Bayern continued to play forward, Düren hardly had any scenes on the offensive. Jackmuth prevented a higher deficit several times. In addition, David Pütz headed a Lupfer Choupo-Motings off the line (63rd), young talent Jamal Musiala only hit the outside post after a solo in a narrow space (64th). With a flick from 18 meters Choupo-Moting got the final score (75th).

Due to the tight schedule of FC Bayern due to the corona pandemic, the DFB had moved the game from September 11 to October 15. The game took place in Munich’s Allianz-Arena, 1. FC Düren had exchanged its home rights due to a planned stadium renovation.

In the first round of the cup, there is only one more game missing: FC Schalke 04’s opponent has still not been determined. Türkgücü Munich sued the Bavarian Football Association after it had originally reported FC Schweinfurt 05 for the DFB Cup. A final decision on the opponents of Schalke is still pending, so the draw for the second round of the cup has to wait.
