ARLINGTON, Texas, USA (AP) – Dak Prescott suffered a horrific fracture of his ankle after recording the first touchdown catch of his career, backup quarterback Andy Dalton led a series that culminated in a field goal in the last play and the Dallas Cowboys beat the New York Giants 37-34 on Sunday, who have not won this season.
Michael Gallup made two spectacular catches at the ends on Dalton passes, the second of them from 38 yards that carried the ball to New York’s 16-yard line. The Cowboys used up the game clock to three seconds from time and Greg Zuerlein hit a winning field goal for the second time this season, a 34-yard finish.
Prescott was dropped by defensive back Logan Ryan at the end of a nine-yard run in the third quarter when the Dallas quarterback’s ankle caught under Ryan and appeared to slip away.
Prescott grabbed his leg as he writhed in pain, and television footage showed his right foot turning at an abnormal angle. The quarterback was trying to hold back crying when he was pulled from the field aboard a cart and with his leg immobilized. Most of his teammates came over to comfort him, as did several Giants players – including Ryan.
The Cowboys reported that Prescott suffered a dislocated right ankle and was taken to a hospital, where he will undergo surgery later.
Dalton started with Cincinnati for nine seasons before the Bengals selected Joe Burrow as number one in the draft last spring. Dalton signed a one-year contract as a backup for Prescott.
It was the first game in Dallas for former Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, the Giants’ current offensive coordinator and who was replaced by Mike McCarthy in Dallas after the Cowboys failed to qualify for the postseason last year amid high expectations.
