Colorado Avalanche signs D Devon Toews on a four-year deal

The Colorado Avalanche signed a newly acquired defense attorney Devon Toews one to four year contract for $ 16.4 million on Tuesday to avoid arbitration.

The deal will have an average annual value of $ 4.1 million for Toews, acquired earlier this month by the New York Islanders for a second round selection in 2021 and a selection in the second round 2022.

He was supposed to hold an arbitration hearing on Saturday.

“We are excited to have Devon under contract for the next four years,” said Joe Sakic, general manager of Avalanche. “As I said when we bought him, Devon is a smart two-way puck-motion defender who is a permanent defender and makes a great transition.”

The 26-year-old Toews scored six goals and added 22 assists in 68 games for the Islanders in 2019-20, his second season in the NHL. He added two goals and eight assists over 22 games in the playoffs.

The islanders selected the Abbotsford, BC-born in the fourth round of Quinnipiac University’s 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
