Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Tigers No. 1 game against Boston College on Saturday. Lawrence and the program announced Thursday night. Lawrence’s positive test came on Wednesday after testing negative on Sunday, Clemson sports director Dan Radakovich told CBS Sports.
Lawrence will miss Saturday’s game and while his status is unknown for next week’s showdown with Notre Dame # 4, it seems possible that he could be cleared up.
“I’ve tested positive for COVID-19 and my symptoms have been relatively mild while following the Clemson and ACC protocol. The only thing that hurts is missing out on the opportunity to be with my teammates this weekend and play the game. ” I am in love,” Lawrence said in a statement. “I hate that I can’t be there, but I’ll watch out of isolation and pull after our boys while I wait for the opportunity to get back on the team.”
According to ACC guidelines, athletes who test positive must isolate “at least 10 days after symptoms / positive tests” appear. By the time Lawrence returns, the Tigers will likely be reaching out to real freshman DJ Uiagalelei, a five-star 2020 recruitment class candidate. Uiagalelei has completed 12 of 19 passes for 102 yards on substitute service this season.
“Trevor authorized us tonight to announce that he tested positive for COVID-19 and is now isolated,” Swinney said in a statement. “He has good symptoms but will not be available for this week’s game against Boston College. We will certainly miss Trevor, but this is an opportunity for others to improve and we look forward to a very good BC to compete. ” Team on Saturday. ”

Lawrence is the potential number 1 in the 2021 NFL Draft and is among the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy this season. The junior has completed 135 of 191 passes for 1,833 yards, 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions, leading Clemson to a 6-0 start. His stats are particularly impressive when you consider that the Tigers have often played reserves on blowout wins in the second half.
It’s not the first time Clemson has addressed COVID-19 issues this year as the pre-season program addressed outbreaks. But Lawrence will be the most famous player in college football to miss game time due to a positive test this season.
