Badminton: No European championship this year

Mülheim.
There will be no European badminton championship in 2020. Kiev will get the 2021 edition instead. The BVM is scheduled to start on October 3rd.

Due to the corona pandemic, there will be no European badminton championship this year. After the cancellation in April, there was initially a postponement within this calendar year, but the European Badminton Association considered a complete cancellation to be the most sensible solution.

Instead, host Kiev will get the tournament next year. The singles, doubles and mixed competitions will take place from April 27th to May 2nd, 2021.

Completion of the new qualification period

The tournament is, so to speak, the culmination of the expanded Olympic qualification. The original stage of obtaining tickets for Tokyo will resume on January 1st and will run until May 2nd. However, only those tournaments that have been postponed to a later date or canceled in 2020 count. The individual EM would have been the final event in the regular qualification period.

The badminton competitions will take place in the Japanese capital from July 24th to August 2nd, 2021.

Team World Championship still in 2020?

At the team world championship, however, the world association BWF is still hoping that it will take place this year. The tournament in Aarhus, Denmark, originally planned for May, was initially postponed to mid-August and October 3rd to 11th.

This date now collides with the planned kick-off of the Badminton Bundesliga. Therefore, the start of the first division should now take place on October 18th. The second division teams around the withdrawn 1. BV Mülheim, on the other hand, will continue to play their first game day on October 3rd.
