ATP> Djokovic: “When people are in leadership positions, it is not in their interest to change”

By creating a new association of professional players this summer, the PTPA, Novak Djokovic has not only made allies, quite the contrary. Several players including Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray have spoken out against a schism within the professional circuit despite appeals from the foot of the world number 1 who considers his cause just and justified. Asked by local journalists during a media day in Belgrade this week, the local detailed his big ideas and especially denounced the system in place for years.

“I have already underlined why this has to exist. It not only occurred to us, but it is an idea that has been around for over 20 years. Goran (Ivanisevic) is my coach, he was in the first generation who wanted to create such an organization. There have been several attempts, but due to various factors they failed. Tennis is a global sport, it is popular all over the world and it is very important. But on the other hand, tennis, out of the top 10, is shy when it comes to exploiting its full potential. There is a problem, because there is a monopoly and a system that has governed for decades, and when people are in leadership positions it is not in their best interests to change. I did not participate in the creation of the organization to oppose anyone. The aim is to represent the rights of tennis players, we know we have a long way to go ”said the Serbian as a freed politician.
