SAINT-PETERSBURG, Russia – Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Milos Raonic have both qualified for the quarter-finals of the St. Petersburg tennis tournament.

Second-seeded Shapovalov defeated qualifier Ilya Ivashka of Belarus 6-1, 6-4 in a second round match on Thursday.

Sixth-ranked Raonic defeated Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-2.

Shapovalov, who sits 12th in the world rankings, saved all five break points he faced. He also won 89 percent of the points after letting his first serve ball in play.

“I’m in good physical condition at the moment, and I played really well today,” said the Canadian.

In the quarter-finals on Friday, Shapovalov will face fifth-seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka. They have faced each other twice in their careers and have each won a game.

“Wawrinka is a very tough opponent,” Shapovalov said. I think he’s in great shape right now. He played two tough games in this tournament. It’s especially hard to play against him when he’s confident. I think it will be a tough game, but I’m also in good shape, and I’ve also played well in two games here. “

Raonic laughs at spoon service!

Raonic, who is in 21st place in the ATP standings, was also perfect when confronted with his opponent’s chances of a breakage, as he broke a deadlock four times in similar circumstances.

Raonic will face fourth-seeded Russian Karen Khachanov in the quarter-finals.

Shapovalov is now the highest ranked seed still in contention following the elimination of seed Daniil Medvedev, out by American Reilly Opelka 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the second round.

Opelka saved four break points in the deciding set before defeating Medvedev.

The American converted his third set point on the last play of the second set. He then broke Medvedev’s serve as he led 5-4 in the third set.

Medvedev, the sixth player in the world, has lost four of his last five games, including the US Open semi-final to Dominic Thiem. His only victory came at the expense of Richard Gasquet in the first round in St. Petersburg.

Opelka will meet seventh-seeded Borna Coric of Croatia in the quarter-finals, while third-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev will battle Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

No trouble for Raonic against Bublik
