SAINT-PETERSBURG, Russia – Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Milos Raonic have both qualified for the four-stage at the tournament in St. Petersburg.
Second-seeded Shapovalov defeated fifth-seeded Swiss Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5 in the quarter-finals of this indoor tournament.
Shapovalov was solid on serve, earning 84 percent of his points with his first ball, compared to 72 percent for Wawrinka.
The Ontarian now has a career 2-1 record against the veteran Switzerland.
Shapovalov will face third headliner Andrey Rublev in the semi-final on Saturday. The Russian dominated Briton Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-1.
Shapovalov holds a 2-1 advantage over Rublev in their showdown.
No 6 Milos Raonic, meanwhile, defeated another local favorite, Karen Khachanov, winning 6-1, 7-6 (7/1).
The Croatian Borna Coric will face Raonic in the semi-finals. The latter won in front of the American Reilly Opelka, 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.
