An emotional Damien Cook fought back tears after South Sydney’s 20:16 loss to the Penrith Panthers as he came to terms with a third consecutive preliminary defeat for the Rabbitohs.
Souths have lost to Penrith, Canberra and the Roosters for the past three seasons.
In the run-up to Penrith’s attempt at victory, Cook missed out on a duel against Isaah Yeo, which allowed the panther hillbilly to take a clean break and line up the winner.

Cook, who was comforted by Blues teammate and Panthers center-back Nathan Cleary after completing his interview, said he couldn’t fault his teammates’ performance.
