The Young America’s Cup sailing, which was to be held in Auckland (New Zealand) between February and March 2021, in parallel to the 36th America’s Cup, has been canceled due to entry restrictions imposed by the New Zealand government due to the COVID-19.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, one of the organizers, today announced the cancellation of the race because “It has not received the same state of exception (to border restrictions) as the Copa América teams, despite being an official part of the program.”

The organization, shared by RNZYS, China Sports Industry Group and Emirates Team New Zealand, already had nineteen teams from thirteen nations and was expected to generate revenue of five million euros for the New Zealand economy.

Spain was preparing a team for the competition and the Canarian María Cantero, 23, had already been chosen as a crew member for the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club team, which has been competing in Europe in recent weeks.

The crews of the Young America’s Cup had to be 18 years old on November 1, 2020 and less than March 25 to 12, 2021. This edition was going to be the first mixed race of its kind.

In an official statement, a spokesperson for the New Zealand Immigration Ministry said that there was a strict control to grant an exception to border restrictions by Covid-19 and that immigration cannot apply differences when considering applications.

“The 36th Copa América teams have been granted border exceptions because it is a ‘government approved’ competition”, unlike the juvenile test.
