Steve Kerr describes Klay Thompson’s “next logical step” in injury rehabilitation

The Warriors don’t know if Klay Thompson will participate in team training starting next week at the Chase Center.

Despite the fact that the five-time All-Star had an extremely long layoff (he tore his left ACL during Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals), Steve Kerr isn’t too worried about his shooting guard.

“I’ve seen him a couple of times this summer in Orange County, I’ve seen him train and he’s doing great,” Kerr told The Athletic’s Anthony Slater on Tuesday. “It’s really cool. Playing 5 on 5 is the next logical step for him.

“Whether it happens in this field or along the way, we will see. Everything is so in the air right now, I don’t want to place expectations on any player or the group as a whole.”

Simply put, you shouldn’t expect Klay to fit in next week. And it’s possible he’ll continue training in Southern California until the Warriors training camp opens for the 2020-21 season.

But as for the three-time NBA champion looking “awesome,” his dad, Mychal, provided a very upbeat update over the weekend.

“He’s going great, man. He’s playing, going full speed,” Mychal said on SiriusXM NBA Radio. “Back to being a basketball player – completely healthy. I’ve seen him train and I’ll tell you one thing – that’s crazy to say, but his shot looks even better.

“(This) should be expected because that’s all you can do for so long is just go out and shoot, shoot, shoot until you get full space.

“But he’s ready to go. If the season were to start (at normal time), he’d be out there with Steph (Curry) and the boys.”
