Remco Evenepoel has gotten rid of his crutches: “The real brain …

Six weeks after his heavy crash in the Tour of Lombardy, Remco Evenepoel has taken the next step on his road to recovery. On Friday, scans at the AZ hospital in Herentals showed that the recovery from the pelvic fracture of the 20-year-old Deceuninck-Quick-Step rider is developing in the right direction.

From now on, Evenepoel no longer needs his crutches when walking around and can slowly start building up training on the rollers, in combination with a series of rehabilitation exercises with the physiotherapist. If that goes well, he can look forward to a first outdoor training ride.

“I am doing well”, said Remco Evenepoel after his visit to the hospital. “I am almost completely pain-free and much more mobile. I can now leave the crutches aside and I am happy that I can get to work more focused. My recovery process has gone well in recent weeks. Initially I found it difficult to go from everything to nothing in terms of movement. But after a necessary rest period I became more and more mobile lately. “

“For the next few weeks, I will spend a few hours with the physiotherapist during the week doing exercises for pelvic stability and flexibility, which I will combine with cycling training on the rollers. If everything goes well and the weather is nice, I can go cycling outside. You can say that the real recovery has now started for me, working towards a good workout. The next goal now is to complete a good workout on the rollers and then ride outside. We will then see how that turns out. I definitely don’t go out in the rain and take unnecessary risks of slipping. As soon as the weather improves, I will certainly enjoy a nice outdoor training ride ”, says Evenepoel.
