Paul Millsap-Warriors’ free agency fit is perfect, says Tom Haberstroh

In late July, yours truly wrote about why Paul Millsap would be an ideal sign for the Warriors in free will with the exception of the mid-level taxpayer.

Tom Haberstroh, NBC Sports’ NBA insider, agree with this assessment?

“Paul Millsap is a breeze. He reminds me a lot of David West and what he brought to the Warriors,” Haberstroh told Grant Liffmann of NBC Sports Bay Area Wednesday afternoon. “A high IQ, sturdy, very skilled offensive player. And a guy who is willing to take him on the defensive.

“And Paul Millsap is a guy who I think will also want to chase a championship during his later years. And he can turn 3 really, really well.

“I think it’s perfect.”

Millsap – who turns 36 in February – is about to complete a $ 90 million three-year contract with the Denver Nuggets. He is no longer a guy who will put up large numbers consistently, but he can be great in his more limited role.

Before the season was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, Millsap averaged 12.0 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.9 steals, while shooting a 43.5% 3-point.

In 14 playoff games in the Orlando bubble, he averaged 8.4 points and 4.1 rebounds over 23.7 minutes, while shooting 37.5% from depth.

The 6-foot-7-tall striker punched two big 3 points during the third quarter of the Nuggets’ shocking Game 7 win over the LA Clippers on Tuesday night, which helped give Denver a cushion.

Interestingly, last week, when the Nuggets were three games to one behind, Marc Spears of The Undefeated asked Millsap about his future with the franchise.

“We’ll see, we’ll see,” he said. “My main focus coming here was to help this team and organization get over the hump and help some of these younger guys become superstars, that they are. I feel like I’ve helped with that, and we’ll see what this summer holds. .

“At the end of the day, I love being here, but at the end of the day, it’s still a bargain. So, weighing both options and understanding the basketball business. I have to make a decision based on, you know, for my family and I, and this is my family too.

“So, it’s going to be a tough decision and hopefully they want me back.”

If Denver upsets the basketball world and wins the 2020 NBA title (or even loses in the final), will it change his or the Nuggets’ perspective on a reunion?

It’s fair to assume that the Nuggets may not have the financial means to re-sign the four-time All-Star, and Millsap escapes this in his comments at Spears.

We will have answers soon enough. For now, enjoy watching all-time selection # 47 of the 2006 draft battle LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.
