The 49ers have reportedly created $ 9.5 million of salary cap space with a restructuring of Dee Ford’s contract.
Ford’s salary for 2020 has mostly been converted into a signing bonus, ESPN’s Field Yates reported on Saturday morning.
With the roster movement upon us, three teams have created noticeable cap space for 2020 by converting a veteran’s base salary into a signing bonus, per source:

▪️49ers: $ 9.5M created via Dee Ford

Ford, who was expected to earn $ 13.65 million in base salary, has likely seen his base salary drop as the team offset the remaining amount with a signing bonus that is spread over the 2023 season for purposes salary cap.

Before the restructuring, the 49ers were $ 8.7 million below the salary cap. But once each team has established their initial regular season roster, the salaries of all 53 players – plus those on the injured rosters and the practice squad – count towards the cap. At this point, only the first 51 contracts count towards the cap.
