Newport County 1-0 Newcastle LIVE – Abrahams scores after a Gillespie mistake

Newport’s gesture to the late NUFC fan

Newport County will pay tribute to an avid Newcastle United supporter during the fourth round of the Carabao Cup tonight, writes Sean McCormick.

The magpie fan Robert Godden sadly passed away 12 years ago at the age of 22 and left two children behind.

Growing up he always wanted to attend a United game and his mom Suzanne, who is a Newport County fan, promised that one day she would take him to see his beloved Newcastle in action.

When the two teams pulled together in the fourth round of the League Cup, their first meeting since 1947, Suzanne finally had the chance to keep her promise to her boy.

Although fans won’t be able to attend the game tonight, Robert will proudly take his place on the Pure Vans away stand at Rodney Parade Stadium in Newport.

A photo of Robert will be posted to a seat on the booth that, under normal circumstances, would have housed the traveling Toon Army, to ensure he could see Steve Bruce’s crew in action in South Wales.

Whole story here.
