Marco Reus makes a good comeback at Borussia Dortmund

SA comeback after a long period of suffering makes Borussia Dortmund fans dream of another attack on the industry leader Bayern Munich. The fact that captain Marco Reus is back on board and full of zest for action ensures both relief and hopes at BVB. 216 days after his last competitive game to date, the 31-year-old was again the linchpin in the 2-1 friendly win against Sparta Rotterdam.

After 70 minutes, Reus left the pitch on Monday evening, visibly satisfied. And four words from BVB coach Lucien Favre about him were enough to underpin the prospect of a successful season: “He is physically ready.” That the national soccer player made his remarkable return with the opening goal in the 63rd minute after a fine solo run crowned, matched the good mood in the sunny training center in Dortmund-Brackel. “He had a lot of lively actions and scored his goal. That was an important sign for him too, ”said BVB licensed player boss Sebastian Kehl.

40 injuries documented

At halftime, Favre had asked Reus whether he could continue playing. “He said everything is fine. It’s good that he can play for 70 minutes. ”After the cup in Bremen at the beginning of February, Reus had complained of adductor problems. The initially forecast downtime of four weeks turned into a tough rehab that lasted over six months with a failed comeback attempt at the beginning of June.

Born in Dortmund, the injury history is long. Almost every part of the Reus body was affected from head to toe. In the past ten years alone, more than 40 moderate to severe injuries have been documented.

Not only Professor Ingo Froböse from the German Sport University in Cologne recently discovered that Reus’ body is actually not suitable for the extreme stresses of a competitive athlete in professional football. Nevertheless, Favre will need his captain as the leader of the gathering of gifted people in the tightly packed season. Especially in games against the competition at eye level.

Favre is known for keeping the stakes of his players carefully – if at all possible. He is just as careful with young players as he is with Reus because of his susceptibility to injury. And this does not decrease with advanced age. It is quite possible that Favre is not planning on Monday in the DFB Cup game at MSV Duisburg, but only for the Bundesliga start on September 19 against their former club Borussia Mönchengladbach with Reus.
