Joop Zoetemelk was successfully operated on after he was hit during a bicycle ride near Paris on Sunday. No life-threatening damage was found to the 1980 Tour de France winner.

The 73-year-old Zoetemelk broke both arms and one leg on Sunday when he was hit by a car. The cycling legend, who has lived in France for years, was taken to hospital by helicopter.

“Joop was operated on Sunday on an arm and a leg. In any case, there is no organ damage or head trauma”, Zoetemelk’s wife Dany Zoetemelk said on Monday. The Telegraph know.

“He will have to stay in hospital for a while, but he is doing well under the circumstances.”

Zoetemelk is still the last Dutchman to win the Tour de France. In 1968, Jan Janssen was the only other Dutchman to win the biggest cycling race in the world.

The 107th edition of the Tour ended Sunday, which was won by Slovenian Tadej Pogacar. The UAE Team Emirates rider drove his fellow countryman Primoz Roglic of Jumbo-Visma out of the yellow jersey on the penultimate day.
