Handball problems: Flensburg-Handewitt in Champions League

Dhe mood has changed. A few weeks ago it felt very strange that the 2020/21 handball season should start with the Champions League – and not with the Supercup between champions and cup winners and then the Bundesliga opener. There was reluctance among the German participants from Kiel and Flensburg; Long journeys, empty halls, and how would foreign hygiene concepts work? Now Viktor Szilagyi, managing director of THW Kiel says: “We are looking forward to the game, because we have been working towards this date for weeks.”

On Thursday the THW will play at RK Zagreb in Croatia. It is Sander Sagosen’s competitive debut in the jersey of Kiel. But the big issue is different. How do handball professionals travel in times of Corona? Szilagyi says: “We planned the trip to Zagreb so that we spend as little time as possible there. We fly to Zagreb by charter plane on the match day and then straight back after the game, in the meantime we will be in a kind of bubble in which we are among ourselves. Due to the strict rules, we have great confidence that security is guaranteed on site. ”500 spectators are allowed in Zagreb.
