Liverpool FC has presented its second newcomer. Thiago changes from FC Bayern to the Reds. He is the first departure that the Munich would have liked to keep since Toni Kroos left. The transfer fee could still exceed that of the German.
AAt the media conference on Friday afternoon, they kept a low profile at Liverpool FC. “There is not really anything to say because I learned that it is not official until it is announced,” said coach Jürgen Klopp happily when asked about Thiago and the status of the negotiations.
His grin, however, already indicated that perhaps the most important change this summer had already been dealt with. Klopp shrugged his shoulders apologetically: “I’m not an announcer, so I don’t know what to say. But it looks pretty promising. “
A few hours later everything was official. The 29-year-old midfielder is moving to the Premier League after seven years with FC Bayern and has signed a contract on Anfield Road until 2024. The Reds did not want to confirm the term, but wrote in their message of a “long-term contract”.
The reason for Thiagos move to Klopp are sporting reasons and the search for new challenges. “Thiago has developed from a 22-year-old talent to an absolute leading player, whom we also appreciate personally,” said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. A “deserving player like him will always be a friend of our club”.
With Bayern, Thiago had won the championship every year since he came from FC Barcelona in 2013, including the DFB Cup four times. Last season he crowned his time in Munich with a triple of championship, cup and Champions League.
Thiago in second place behind Douglas Costa and Hummels
Bayern had fought to extend the working paper, which expired in 2021, but could no longer decisively influence the Spaniard’s plans. Thiago said goodbye to the club and fans with an emotional video message on social media.
The transfer fee should provide at least some consolation. It is just under 30 million euros and thus higher than the 25 million that the German record champions 2014 received from Real Madrid for Toni Kroos.
The national player was the last professional Bayern had to let go against their will. Only Mats Hummels, who returned to Dortmund for 30.5 million euros in 2019, and Douglas Costa, who moved to Juventus Turin for 40 million euros a year earlier, achieved higher sums in the history of Munich.
According to the British media, only 22 million euros will initially be due. The rest of the sum is packed in performance-based bonus payments.
For the English champions, Thiago, who has made 39 appearances for Spain, is the second new signing this summer. The Reds had previously signed Greek defender Kostas Tsimikas. The 24-year-old came from Olympiacos for an estimated € 13 million.
