Crash Lance Stroll affects Sergio Perez

Lance Stroll crashed hard from the Tuscan Grand Prix last Sunday with a blowout. The RP20 was heavily damaged and that has consequences for Sergio Perez for the time being.

Racing Point had brought only one new package of updates to Mugello and it was on Stroll’s car. Since it crashed and that package is broken, the British team will have to work hard to make two new packages, but it is very doubtful whether that will work.

The question was whether it would be possible to finish a second package before the Grand Prix of Russia, at the end of next week, so that Sergio Perez could also race it.

Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer explains: “Lance Stroll drove the upgrade, so now we will have to do a lot of work to get enough parts together so they can both race the upgrade in Russia.”

Spare parts

Stroll’s father’s team only had enough spare parts to run one car with the upgrade in Mugello. If they don’t have enough for both, the Mexican – who leaves at the end of the year to make way for Sebastian Vettel – will have to wait. Stroll represents Perez in the championship and therefore has priority over new parts.

Plenty of spare parts are needed because the car cannot just return to the old specification if something is damaged. Perez had told reporters before Sunday’s race where he finished fifth that he is looking forward to the upgrade in Sochi.
