Chicago bears can now bring back two old friends for pennies

The Chicago Bears have already remade their defensive secondary this offseason knowing full well that they would likely lose two stable veterans. One being the cornerback, Prince Amukamara, whom they had to reduce for salary cap reasons. The other was Ha Ha Clinton-Dix who went into free agency in search of a bigger salary. Amukamara ended up in Las Vegas while Clinton-Dix signed with Dallas. That was it.

Chicago has evolved. They hired veteran Tashaun Gipson to compete with Deon Bush for the vacant starting safe position. Artie Burns and Tre Roberson were signed as free agents while Jaylon Johnson was added to the draft at the cornerback. This was how bears were going to be different in high school.

Sometimes though, the NFL has a funny way of throwing a curve ball. Just months after the two signed with their new teams, reality hit hard. The Raiders and Cowboys decided to go with the youth movements, cutting Amukamara and Clinton-Dix respectively. Considering she’s so close to the regular season, there’s no way either man could command remarkable money.

This opens the door for Chicago to potentially bring them back at a discounted price, adding quality depth and experience to the rear.

Chicago Bears urged to explore possibility

Of the two, the one that makes the most sense is Amukamara. Right now the Bears have question marks at the cornerback. Burns and Roberson have already seen their seasons end with injuries. This has already started to test what was an uncertain depth at the position. The Bears have confidence in Johnson as well as Buster Skrine, but Amukamara would be a welcome safety cover who knows the system and knows the locker room.

Clinton-Dix. The bears seem satisfied with the security available to them. So if he did come in, it would be strictly that deep. It may not be something that interests him. Then again, he’s already pocketed over $ 2 million from the Cowboys. Coming back to Chicago among familiar faces with a cheaper deal can seem pretty appealing.

General manager Ryan Pace wouldn’t have much to lose by exploring the idea.
