Brazilian Maya Gabeira broke her own record for the biggest wave ever surfed by a woman. Gabeira, who comes from Rio de Janeiro, had conquered the 22.40 meter high wave in the surfer hotspot Nazaré in Portugal at a WSL competition in February. It exceeded its own mark of 20.72 meters from 2018. Gabeira has set a new world record, the World Surf League (WSL) confirmed in a message.
“I risked more than I normally like to do,” commented Gabeira on her record ride, according to the WSL. In 2013, the Brazilian almost died in a record attempt in Nazaré in 2013 – she lives there today. “The speed was very high. But the sound of the wave as it broke let me know that this was probably the biggest wave I have ever surfed.”
Still, the decision was so tight that the World Surf League even got scientists involved. Ultimately, she came to the conclusion that Gabeira’s wave was about one meter larger than that of the French Justine Dupont on the same day of competition.
