There are always surprises that happen at the discount deadline for each team. Top-tier free agents are signed, players are drafted and excited, and camp reports have everyone getting everyone excited about the players to see them let go.
1. Random swing tackle
The surprise here is the Raiders’ combination of moves. First it was David Sharpe’s trade with Washington, which in itself is not a big surprise. Sharpe was in a competition to be the team’s swing tackle, but it was clear Sam Young was leading the way in this area. I even asked offensive coordinator Greg Olson why the team felt comfortable making this move, and his response confirmed Young’s worth.
“Well, Sam Young came in, one of the players we signed in the offseason who had a really good camp, so it made that move a little easier,” Olson replied. “We love Sam and we love the development of Brandon Parker.”
Then Sam Young was among the released players, while Parker was among the 53 players. Sharpe beat Parker in relief from Trent Brown last season.
Give a meaning:
Teams often release a veteran and keep the developing player for the time being, and a few days later they do the switcheroo. They often do. They did so with Kyle Wilber and Josh Mauro last season, signing both days after the waiver period and placing Isaiah Johnson and Nathan Peterman in IR with the designation to return. Alternatively, they could bring Young back after the first game of the season, signing him to an unsecured contract.
