Willian says Chelsea snubbed him despite having Frank Lampard’s support

Willian opened on his departure from Chelsea, calling it the club’s fault after receiving support from Frank Lampard.

The Brazilian international called time for seven years at Stamford Bridge following his move from Shakhtar in 2013.

And Arsenal moved to hook the striker on a free transfer, despite being Chelsea’s great rival in London.

It comes after the failed contract negotiations between Willian and the Blues.

Chelsea were ready to give the 32-year-old a two-year contract but asked for three.

Stamford Bridge bosses were reluctant to give him a deal that would see him earn over £ 100,000 a week at the age of 35.

And Willian insisted that it was the club that forced him out, rather than Lampard.

“They thought I was coming to age 32 they couldn’t give me a three-year contract,” he said.

“I felt I had demonstrated my fitness, that I was as good as ever and that I deserved that deal.

“Frank Lampard wanted me to stay. He picked me in more games than I probably ever started there.

“Before I played two games and then I left myself on the bench, which I know is part of football, but I enjoyed playing more”.

Prior to Willian’s departure, Lampard insisted he would not blame the player who joined Arsenal.

He said: “Mine and his relationship are very close and I would have no feeling of disappointment if he were to continue.

“He is a fantastic man and a fantastic player. I think he will feel that way for Chelsea.

“I’ll let him say his own words. But I don’t want anyone trying to find a negative attitude.

“The club has done very well in this too. If it goes on, I will send him my best wishes. We are here.

“When a player has expired, he has the freedom and the right to play wherever he wants.

“You have to understand that if they stay in the league and he’s a player of Willian’s qualities, then they’ll go and contribute to that team.

“We have to accept it and move on. I have no problem with that.”
