Warholm breaks European record over 400 meter hurdles

Dhe Norwegian Karsten Warholm ran a European record over 400 meters hurdles at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm with the second fastest time in athletics history. The two-time world champion won on Sunday in 46.87 seconds, clearly ahead of Frenchman Wilfried Happio (49.14). The 23-year-old Warholm had also held the old European record of 46.92, which he set on August 29, 2019 in Zurich. This time he was only 0.09 seconds short of the world record.

Touching the last hurdle probably prevented Warholm from cracking the 46.78 second mark set by Kevin Young (USA) at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Young’s record is the oldest surviving outdoor world record in a man’s career. The German champion Constantin Preis from Sindelfingen came in sixth in the race in Stockholm with 50.13 seconds.

High-flyer Armand Duplantis set a world record for the year with 6.01 meters in the pole vault. The 20-year-old Swede, who has held the world record at 6.18 meters since February and an outdoor record of 6.05, held the Belgian Ben Broeders (5.73) and world champion Sam Kendricks (USA), who was only 5th Made it, 53, safely at bay. Former world champion Raphael Holzdeppe from Zweibrücken came in fifth in his first international start in the Corona season, only over a weak 5.33 meters.

In the women’s 100-meter sprint, European Championship runner-up Gina Lückenkemper (SCC Berlin) finished fifth with a time of 11.33 seconds, a hundredth of a second slower than Rebekka Haase (Wetzlar / 11.32) in fourth place. The Swiss Aija del Ponte won in 11.20 seconds.
