Major league golf is back, baby! It seems an eternity since Hinako Shibuno has sensationally won the Women’s British Open in Woburn; a year and two days to be exact. Under normal circumstances, Shane Lowry would have defended his Open title three weeks ago in Sandwich, concluding the 2020 main season for men. But these are far from normal circumstances, and here we are, starting right now, four months late, with a tournament long known as Glory’s Last Shot. A world upside down, huh.
Enough time has passed that we have to remember the 2019 winners in the men’s majors. Here is the roll of honor …

Koepka is looking to become just the second player to win the PGA three times in a row, having held off a resurrected Tiger Woods at Bellerive in 2018, then withstood a charge from Dustin Johnson – and his demons, an unprecedented collapse. which seems momentarily probable – at Bethpage Black last May. Walter Hagen is the only other man to pull off a hat-trick in this tournament; in fact, he handled four of them in its turn during the 1920s, when the PGA was a matchplay event. Considering how close Koepka got to WGC St Jude last weekend, there wouldn’t have been a big surprise if he brought this up. If he does, he would be the first man to win three in a row in any major since Peter Thomson won his third Open in 1956.
Koepka is one of many stellar names with huge hopes of prevailing in Harding Park. Justin Thomas, the new world number one, after a win at WGC St Jude.
