Update: Ajax makes Marin transfer official, Romanian leaves after one year

Razvan Marin has left Ajax. The Romanian midfielder leaves Amsterdam after one season for an adventure at the Italian Cagliari. Marin landed in Italy on Monday, all we have to do is wait for the press release.

Marin came over from Standard Liège for 12.5 million euros last summer. However, the midfielder was unable to live up to the high expectations for a moment and was soon relegated to the reserve bench. Marin still had a contract with Ajax until 2024.

Marin will first be rented by Cagliari for a year. The Italian club has the obligation to take him over after this season. It is expected that this will cost about ten million euros. Marc Overmars, director of player policy, will therefore get a large part of his investment back.

“I’m glad to be here,” said Marin after landing in Italy. “Cagliari is the best option in my career right now. It was also my first choice.” Marin played seventeen matches for Ajax last season.

Update: Ajax has confirmed the departure of Razvan Marin to Cagliari through official channels. The Romanian will indeed first go to Sardinia on a rental basis, after which the deal will be converted into a permanent transfer after next season. Marin was still under contract with Ajax until mid-2024, but was not successful in Amsterdam. The team from Amsterdam does not make any statements about the transfer fee, but it is reported that Ajax will receive about ten million euros for Marin.
