With COVID-19 launching a wrench in college sports competition this fall, hundreds of college golfers will likely spend the end of summer and fall looking for places to compete. One of the best instructors hopes to make this quest a little easier by forming the Lone Wolf Tour.
Golf Digest Ohio’s best teacher Kyle Morris caters to active collegiate male and female players with a series of 36-hole one-day events at eight locations in the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast. The first scheduled tournament is scheduled for September 11 at Dublin Golf Club in Ohio.
“I train a lot of high school and college players, and the challenge is always to stay motivated and keep training, which is difficult when there are no tournaments on the horizon,” says Morris, who runs The Golf Room outside Columbus. “In this format, players can get in and out in one day and challenge themselves beyond what they would achieve by playing day after day informally against teammates and friends.”
The entry fee of $ 225 per event covers 36 holes and lunch between rounds. Events take place on top-tier courses such as Bulle Rock in Maryland and Turning Stone Resort in New York and will offer qualifying points for the World Amateur Golf Ranking. The fields will be limited to 54 male and 24 female players, with current college players having priority entry. Security protocols include players carrying their own bags and standard social distancing practices used in many fields.
If the fields are not filled by college golfers, amateurs with an index 2.0 or lower can step up and test their skills.
News of the tour comes the same day the Pac-12 officially announced it would be canceling all athletic competitions, including college golf, for the remainder of the calendar year.
“All the college coaches I’ve talked to are so excited about this, because there’s so much uncertainty in college golf right now,” says Morris, who is organizing the tour in partnership with golf recruiting consultant Rich Brazeau of Charleston, SC “Let’s pretend there is no college golf in 2020 and early 2021. Are those kids retaining their eligibility? Will there be no place for some of those high school kids to come? This is a scary time when, yeah hopefully, we can all sail together. We want to help all these players improve and work towards their goals. “
